You Were Not There

Found this while doing my daily reading over at YouVersion.  I couldn’t say it much better, so here it is.

“It’s pretty amazing to me how much controversy there is surrounding the FIRST verse of the Bible! The Bible doesn’t “ease” in to making huge claims. We can’t even make it through ONE verse before someone says, “Whoa whoa whoa! Wait a second…” I personally LOVE discussing different ideas and theory’s on the origin of the universe. That’s one of those conversations that can go on for hours and hours…sometimes friendly, and other times, well…NOT so friendly. Now I can totally understand the atheist dude who hates me because I’m giving God ALL the credit for the existence of ALL creation…That makes sense to me that he feels that way. He thinks I’m an ignorant freak. But what is just plain ridiculous is the CHRISTIAN dude who assumes I’m going to hell and is calling me to repentance all because my interpretation of Genesis is different then his. Yes (confession) I DO “think” I’m right and the other person…well, wrong…BUT is it OK to believe different things here? Especially when this isn’t a “salvation” issue? “Can we think differently when it comes to how long we think a “day” is? Can we disagree and still be friends?” No? Well…do you think we can maybe hang out in heaven? How about this. How about we both remember what really matters: “In the beginning…GOD” That’s what matters. GOD was there. I wasn’t. You weren’t. Nobody was…except GOD. GOD CREATED. Can we agree on that much? YA? Awesome!!! “So…I’m curious. How do you think God did it?”"

Maybe not this verse specifically, but this is what gets me about Christians.  We can literally fill our hearts with hate cuz we disagree with another “Christians” interpretation of a bible verse.  Really, it bugs me…..and I’m working on that……not working on my disagreement with others, but the fact that I let the disagreements between others bother me:-).

Any thoughts??

Sad but true T. I read blogs and find so many Christ-followers who "hate" others. They are ready to rumble at a drop of a hat. They are ready for a take-down to defend their cause. For crying out loud! i think this guy has some good points. Whether I believe "day" is a literal 24 hours or an expanded period of time makes no difference in the salvation of anyone. period! What does matter is "do you know Jesus as your Savior?" Say yes to that and I can call you my brother in spite of your creation view of "day." The even worse tragedy in my eyes is the old adage: "Christians are the only army that shoots its own wounded." But that is another thought for another time.

Yep, that's the sad part…..we could go on for days on how we dislike each other, but when it comes to what we have in common, we don't have much to say…..it's not "exciting" enough conversation.

      Thanks for stopping by Bill!!

Christian on Christian hate is something that grieves my heart heavily. Rob Bell told a story about a situation similar to this in Velvet Elvis. Basically it was a conversation between a young man and and older man in which the older man basically stated, "You're bound for hell if you don't believe that God created the earth in 6 twenty-four hour days."

I have faith that our generation will remove the hate…..praying that is the case anyway!!

      Thanks for stopping by Dustin!

It's such a human response isn't it…focus on the stuff where we can get our claws in rather than the heart of the matter.

Don't let it stop bugging you Toby either…well, as long as it doesn't become hate of course :)

Yes, trying to limit the hate…..and change the world :-)
