Frustrating Day

by Pastor T on Aug 31st in Our Life

I remember living in Florida in 1995, managing a Domino’s Pizza.  It was like pulling teeth getting someone to speak English.  I used to cuss these people up and down, knowing they had no idea what I was saying.  Maybe now I’m being repaid for all that cussing.

I was in the good ole USA back then and not only expected my employees and customers to speak English, I demanded it.  I simply wouldn’t hire you or take your order if you didn’t.  Florida is a right to work state which pretty much translates into…..I really don’t need a reason to not hire you….and with our sign out front that read, “We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone”….pretty much translated into…..If I’m in a bad mood, you’ll be finding another pizza place.  Yeah, I wasn’t the nicest of guys back then, but I truly feel for those Spanish-speaking people I was so rude to.

The past 6 days I have been the foreigner, lost in translation.  The day after Chaya’s accident, the “professor” (the guy in charge) told us Chaya would go home on Saturday.  Then he (same guy) came in Friday and without giving any reasons, changed it to Tuesday.  Today, the neurologist (NOT the same guy) tells us it will be 2 more days (Wednesday).  I really don’t care what language you speak, if you’re a doctor, in a hospital, with patients…..you MUST know they don’t “want” to be there and when you tell your patients something, there’s a good chance they’re going to believe you.  It would be different if Chaya had some tests run between then and now to have changed their minds, but she hasn’t.  Her condition has not changed.  We found a bruise (soft spot) on the top of her head today, but were then told it has been there.  I’m thinking I would have noticed it before today, but I have to assume they know more than I do.

Anyway, there’s my rant for the day.  Our youth pastor is coming up tomorrow and he speaks German, so we’ll try to find out what’s going on.  At the end of the day, I’m sure they have Chaya’s best interest at heart, but I’m convinced the multiple doctors we speak to do not speak to each other, thus the different stories from each of them.

All that being said, praise God she’s still ok.  On a brighter side, she was able to go to the play room twice today and to a little park outside once.  She was a little more grumpy and in pain today and that’s probably due to the increased activity.  Will plan on slowing it down a bit tomorrow, which hopefully will be our last day there.

Right now I'm doing a little repenting for the me I used to be and praying I remember it whenever I don't understand someone. Every now and again God sends Toby to thump me a good one. This is one of those times. I keep coming back because I know it is what's best for me. Just like the doctor's know what's best for Chaya. And just like God knows what's best for all of us. But I ain't sayin' nuttin' else til I hear from the translator! (:-p)

It's great your friend is coming in to help you with translation. That would have to be frustrating. I get lost enough when Drs talk to me in English with all their big medical terminology! I don't think they can be too careful with a head injury. So sit back & enjoy all that hospital food.
