Grow Up!

11 There is much more we would like to say about this, but it is difficult to explain, especially since you are spiritually dull and don’t seem to listen. 12 You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. 13 For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right. 14 Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.  Hebrews 5:11-14 NLT

I can honestly tell ya that today God led me here.  I normally read a chapter or two a day, but couldn’t stop reading today.  When I got here, I understood why.  I didn’t know it at the time, but this verse is the cornerstone to What’s This Life For dot org.

grow-upThis was written to Jewish Christians who were immature.  They should have been teaching others about God’s Word, but they had not even applied the basics to their own lives.

How many of us are in that boat?  How many of us are reluctant to move away from old traditions, Bible stories and discussions of the “basics”?  We’re never going to fully understand what Christ has to offer while we try to blend in with culture.  A true commitment to Jesus Christ will move you out of your comfort zones.

We must spend more time in the Word!  We must train our conscience, our senses, our mind and our body to distinguish good from evil.  We have to recognize temptation before it traps us.

Sometimes we want all Christ has to offer before we’re spiritually ready for it.  By “ready for it” I mean LIVING IT.  I was certainly there at one point.  All I wanted to do was preach the Word and spread the Word.  It sounded good coming out of my mouth and if I talked enough, I didn’t have to focus on my unGodly lifestyle.

No, we will never fully understand God’s Word, but going to church once a week and picking up a few lines to recite to people isn’t enough.  I’m not saying leave the Bible stories behind because we need to hold on to those as well, but we need to know more about the Bible then Jonah and the big fish.  We need to study so we can teach others and then after we have taught them, we need to make the Word stand by living the Word.

Treat every day like everyone is watching you!

What do they see?

A hypocrite?

Or someone who is practicing what they preach?

I pray for spiritual maturity in all of us!
